1. I would say the main thing is to practice the Torah and not just learn it.

2. I think the real lesson of Hanukkah is that Jews are excellent revolutionaries and religious extremists but very poor at establishing a stable successful society. Within 100 years of the Hanukkah miracle, the Hashmoneans had become despotic and corrupt rulers over Israel. They invited the Edomite General Herod to marry into their priestly family and they invited the Romans to take over the Holy Land is part of the Roman empire. It is hard to imagine a greater betrayal of Torah ideals. I’m sure this is not something that the Orthodox Community wishes to discuss but they should. 

3. Another thing is the Hashmoneans were religious fanatics and fundamentalists. Originally the Greeks did not prohibit Torah and the Hashmoneans staged attacks against the Hellenistic Jews who were attracted to Greek culture. this guerrilla warfare provoked the Greeks to banning the Jewish religion entirely and defiling the temple. Very similar to the Roman response to the Bar Kochba rebellion after which they outlawed Torah and eventually put Rabbi Akiva to death. Akiva was especially targeted by the Romans because although they had granted him special favors for the Palestinian Jewish Community, Akiva eventually betrayed them and anointed Bar Kochba as Messiah and countenanced his rebellion. 

In fact I read an amazing essay many years ago published by the OU claiming that the whole Lag beOmer festival is a commemoration of the students of Rabbi Akiva who were killed serving as officers to Bar Kochba

The Maccabee family would probably be as opposed to modern Orthodox Judaism & places like Yeshiva University as they were to the Greeks. That’s why I think it is so tragically absurd that secular Jews around the world celebrate Hanukkah. They have no idea that they’re celebrating a holiday of religious fundamentalism and extremism!

The corruption of the Hashmonean family is one of the greatest possible proofs that Jewish People need a Savior and Messiah. Christmas is simply the Jewish Hanukkah universalized. Jesus spoke of Hanukkah here:

33“We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because You, who are a man, declare Yourself to be God.”

34Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’d ? 35If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken— 36then what about the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? How then can you accuse Me of blasphemy for stating that I am the Son of God?

37If I am not doing the works of My Father, then do not believe Me. 38But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works themselves, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.”

39At this, they tried again to seize Him, but He escaped their grasp.

40Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing, and He stayed there. 41Many came to Him and said, “Although John never performed a sign, everything he said about this man was true.” 42And many in that place believed in Jesus.
